helping kids, moms, and more!
Beds4kidz has placed over 2,000 people in Beds! But we have been blessed to do much more than that! The video above tells the story of a foster mom in Albuquerque with seven foster kids. The kids had beds ... but the mom only had a small car and had to make multiple trips to take the kids to school each day.
Just who do all of these donated beds go to? Every individual's story is different, but they all have the same basic need; something decent and comfortable to sleep on at night. Here are a few of our experiences that I will always remember:
Dakota was our very first bed recipient. A 12 year old with Spina Bifida, who, due to her physical disability, was unable to get up and down from a regular bed. She had been sleeping on the couch for several years! We found a nice hospital bed, donated by the mother of one of our UpB4 the Son Board members. Volunteers drove all the way to Shiprock to set it up, and Dakota's entire family was thrilled! We posted our success story on our Facebook page, and request started flooding in!
A family of eight who moved here from out of state for dad's job as a butcher and had no beds yet. Through the couple remarrying, they have 6 boys between the ages of 10 & 16, and one has a serious medical disability. By the time they paid the first month's rent and deposit, they had no money left to ship their possessions, and had to let them go. All 8 of them were sleeping on the floor! |
Several young families that had recovered from being homeless, only to lose all their belongings because they couldn't pay the storage space fees.
A working mom and dad, with 3 beautiful young girl, sleeping on the floor. She had missed work due to her Lupus, then lost her job and they fell way behind on bills. They had frames and foundations, but had just been planning to buy the mattresses, when disaster hit. A mom to be, five months pregnant, sleeping on the floor. Three teen brothers, all sharing the same bed. |
Following are three requests that all came to us within the same day!
I have an 11 year-old son with Down Syndrome. We have recently moved from public housing to a beautiful apartment on the Westside of ABQ. I am in need of a bed for my son who uses oxygen at night along with a CPAP machine to help with his breathing. He also uses a nebulizer to help open up his breathing during the day along with an inhaler when we are in the go.

Steve I'm 50 yrs old I've been through a lot of down falls, in the past year became homeless after losing job ! I moved in with my daughter and granddaughter in July of 2014. My daughters drug addiction led to domestic violence against my self and my granddaughter. After 3 months of abuse my granddaughter and I went to Santa Fe to a battered women's shelter! My moms health was declining, she has battled multiple myeloma cancer for past year. My granddaughter and I were traveling back and forth from Santa Fe to Abq twice a week, and the traveling was taking a toll on us, my granddaughter is only 7 yrs old! We decided to move in with my brother here in Abq. On Jan 1st 2015, my brother took his life by hanging! Found myself back to square one as I was unable to stay in the apt we shared! By the grace of God my disability got approved. I found my granddaughter and I an apt near my mom ! If you know of any agencies who can help us with beds, we would be thankful.

We are moving into a home this weekend after a long month of being homeless. We are excited but need help with any household needs. We don't have beds Steve. I want to put smiles on my kids faces! It's been awhile since we have had one. Thanks to God's helping hands n hearing our cry, we finally are gonna b in our own home. Please help me Steve put smiles on their faces.
